Low Brass
Overcoming Adversity
The low brass section is what the band tunes to. They provide a foundation for the sound of the band and are vital to the growth of the band. Low brass instruments are also notoriously hard to learn and play. It takes a lot of breath and strength to play a tuba, and there are also stigmas that come with being a low brass player. By overcoming these hardships, low brass player can enhance the band sound by a lot and are pivotal to a bands good sound. Just like in life, being able to overcome adversity and hardships tend to make us stronger and better.

I love the Harry Potter series and I think we can learn a lot of life lessons from it. The characters face a lot of adversity throughout the series and this is one of my favorite quotes that deal with overcoming it. It is so inspirational and something that a lot of people forget about when they are going through something rough. When dealing with hardships, we often forget the other things that bring us happiness to focus on the situation. We could all better deal with adversity if we just remember the other things in life that can make us happy and "turn on the light" of our happiness.

But you know, happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light." |

This is a paper I wrote for a health disparities class last year. It mainly focuses on the mental health issues faced by many college students and how some try to deal with them. Mental health is something that most don't think of when you think of adversity, but for a lot of people, it is one of the hardest and biggest thing for them to overcome. It comes from within rather than from an outside force and most people cannot control it. It is how we cope with mental health problems like depression and anxiety that reflects how we can grow from overcoming them. The people who succumb to them and don't work to fix or deal with them are the ones who will never reach their peak happiness. One of the main examples in this paper is how many students turn to animals to cope with their problems, which can be a great source of happiness in itself.

This piece is one of my favorites that I have played. It was written in respect for the tragedy of Pompeii, which was a city buried in lava by Mount Vesuvius. The song does an amazing job with showing the emotions the people probably felt during the event and really allows the listener to understand their plight. This is a fairly hard piece to play and I remember my band really struggling with it some days. We faced a lot of hardships when trying to learn it but we also grew a lot from the experience. Just feeling the emotions of the piece and learning to express them helped us to grow. I can remember the elation we felt the first time we did a full run through that actually sounded good. My band director at the time was also kind of hard to please and the first time he praised us for this piece was a major relief for everyone in the band. We became a better band by playing this piece, and I think many people got something out of the piece itself as well as the experience.
